What are air conditioner coils and how do they work?

Air conditioning units have two different types of coils that play different roles in keeping your home or business cool.

Evaporator coils

Evaporator coils can be found in the indoor element of your AC system and are filled with liquid refrigerant. The refrigerant in these coils absorbs the heat from the indoor air and changes state from a liquid into a gas. This process is what facilities the cooling of the air, allowing the cool air to be recirculated back into the room.

Condenser coils

Condenser coils, in contrast, are found in the outdoor element of an air-con system. These coils release the heat that has been absorbed indoors into the outdoor air. During this process, the refrigerant in the coils condenses back into a liquid state, allowing it to absorb more indoor heat in the evaporator coils.

What is the effect of dirty coils?

Air conditioning coils can accumulate dust, dirt and debris over time from the surrounding environment. As a result, the build-up acts like an insulating layer on the coils, which can reduce their ability to transfer heat efficiently. This can have a range of different effects:

Increased energy bills

As dirty coils will not transfer heat as efficiently, they have to use more energy to perform at the same level. This can lead to higher energy bills.

Ineffective cooling

Linking to the previous point, dirty cools may not cool a room to the level that they once did, or they may cool a room unevenly.

Freezing or corrosion of coils

When air is generated from an AC unit that has dirty coils and filters, the unit can become a source of bacteria, which is then circulated around the room. Poor indoor air quality can cause many health issues, such as irritation of the eyes, nose and throat, headaches, dizziness and fatigue, and over longer periods can cause respiratory diseases, heart disease and cancer.

How often should you clean your coils?

So, how often should you clean your coils to mitigate these effects? The frequency of how often you should clean them is dependent on a range of different factors:

Usage frequency

In the summer months or in commercial settings, where AC is being used more regularly, coils are more likely to get dirty faster. During periods of higher usage or in commercial settings, it is recommended to clean your coils every three months.

Environment

In areas that experience high pollution levels, dust or pollen, condenser coils can get dirty quicker. For these environments, it is recommended to clean the coils every three to six months.

Respiratory issues

For those that struggle with allergies and respiratory issues, maintaining high indoor air quality is critical. Air conditioning coils can be cleaned every two to three months in these situations.

Age and condition of equipment

Older equipment or equipment that is already in a poor condition may need to be cleaned more frequently to work effectively. This is very dependent on the equipment itself, so it could require cleaning every two to three months.
